After a varied and celebrated career spanning some 31 years, R.

E.M. announced earlier today that they had reached a decision to split up. Whilst many have been disappointed by recent work, the artistic heights of albums such as Out Of Time and Automatic For The People, and their influence on alternative and college rock will be remembered above that.

From their website, www.remhq.com;

“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.” – R.E.M.
